Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)
Srila Prabhupada was born as Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, in Kolkata, India. From an early age, he was deeply devoted to Lord Krishna and was inspired by the bhakti tradition.
In 1922, he met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who instructed him to spread Krishna consciousness in the English language. Srila Prabhupada dedicated his life to fulfilling this instruction.
At the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada traveled to the United States in 1965 with just a few rupees and a trunk of books. He established ISKCON in 1966 in New York City, igniting a global movement dedicated to the teachings of Lord Krishna.
Srila Prabhupada translated and commented on sacred texts such as the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Caitanya-caritamrta. His works have been translated into over 80 languages and continue to inspire millions worldwide.
By the time of his departure in 1977, Srila Prabhupada had established over 100 temples, farm communities, and schools. His tireless work laid the foundation for a global spiritual movement that thrives to this day.
